All-the-Above

Why we support an All-the-Above Energy Approach

Iowa’s electric co-ops continue to invest in the development of new technologies and diversify our generation mix, including renewable sources of energy. Nationwide, RECs have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 14%, nitrogen oxide by 68% and sulfur dioxide by 83% since 2005. However, many of these new technologies either provide intermittent power rather than dispatchable power or are not yet abundant enough to fully replace traditional generation technologies. To meet the electricity needs of consumers, traditional generation technologies, such as coal, natural gas, fuel oil, hydro, and nuclear, must continue to be part of the electric generation fleet. We believe an all-of-the-above energy strategy has proven to be an affordable and reliable source of power for Iowans. This approach can continue to provide that kind of versatility and resilience we require well into the future.

Benefits of an All-the-Above energy strategy

  • Energy Diversity & Reliability – diversification of the electric generation fleet provides increased reliability by being flexible and nimble to react to fuel price and availability.
  • Economic Benefits – allows grid operators to utilize electric generation types based upon grid needs while simultaneously being mindful of costs.
  • Leverages Iowa’s Strength in Renewable Energy by focusing on how each generation type fits into the portfolio rather than pitting one technology against another.
  • Sustainable & Affordable – provides for continued investment into renewable energy generation while supporting low-cost existing generation.
  • Flexible for the Future – allows new technologies to mature and become cost effective as they are incorporated into the generation fleet while allowing existing generation resources to be utilized until the end of their useful life.

Iowa’s electric co-ops are committed to providing energy that is safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible.

  • Iowa’s electric cooperatives are driving innovation in areas such as solar, wind, battery storage and carbon capture.
  • In order to maintain reliable and affordable power, we continue to rely on traditional resources such as coal, natural gas, and hydro.
  • Co-ops will continue to diversify our generation mix to prepare for a lower-carbon future, but an “all-of-the-above” generation mix is crucial to keeping the lights on for our member-consumers.
